The Iconic Destination Signage Program is the design, fabrication and installation of nearly $1M in interpretive signage infrastructure across Northern BC. This program is funded by the TRTDI and is a continuation of almost a decade of work starting with the Destination Development Strategies and continuing to include the Thematic Framework and Great Northern Circle Route Signage Master Plan.
During the engagement process for the Destination Development Strategies in the Northeast and Northwest, extensive stakeholder engagement and consultation happened and resulted in the identification of iconic features throughout the northern BC region.
Phase 1 of the Signage Program saw signs being installed in the Northeast at five rest stops along the Alaska Highway as part of the Gotta Go Project and in Tumbler Ridge and Dawson Creek for the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark Iconic and the Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway Iconic.
Phase 2 is currently in progress and includes the installation of signage in the Northwest and Central of Northern BC.
The sign types currently being installed throughout the region include: Iconic Primary, Iconic Secondary, Pillar and Beacon.
Each Iconic Location will receive an Iconic Primary and Pillar sign.
NBCTA is working closely with Indigenous communities to ensure appropriate land acknowledgements are included on the signage. The Northeast signage on the Alaska Highway includes an acknowledgement from Treaty 8 Tribal Association and the Kaska Dena Nation.
Phase 2 of the signage project is anticipated to be completed by June, 2024. Northern BC Tourism Association will then begin seeking funding for Phase 3, which will include supplementary signage at rest stops and visitor centres along the route.
